Early Stage Dementia Awareness Training, Arcola Theatre, London.

Arts 4 Dementia warmly invites all arts organisations, facilitators, artists and healthcare professionals alike to book a place on our upcoming Early Stage Dementia Awareness training at the Arcola Theatre in London.

This early-stage dementia awareness session will be delivered for Arts 4 Dementia (A4D) by a Dementia Pathfinders trainer Aubrey Maasdorp, with arts workshop guidance from Nigel Franklin (CEO, A4D).

Arts 4 Dementia: Early-Stage Dementia Awareness Training for Arts Facilitators

Suitable for

Arts facilitators, workshop leaders, animateurs, volunteers and postgraduate arts students. Organisational staff in areas focused on learning, access, inclusion, development, community outreach, audience development, or visitor programmes.

Aim of the Day

To give arts facilitators greater understanding, increased skills and confidence in communicating and working creatively with people experiencing the early stages of dementia and their carers. To help organisations work towards reaching new audiences, making their institutions more inclusive, and increasing their impact in the community.

referrals including signposting through A4D and other arts and health networks;

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate their understanding of the various types of dementia and how these impact on people's abilities and feelings in the early stages
  • Explain the key communication approaches
  • Describe with confidence the value of arts based approaches when working with people with early stage dementia
  • Explain the impact of Arts 4 Dementia's re-energising approach for participants
  • Engage the interest of participants with early-stage dementia and encourage them to develop new creative skills

Training provided by Dementia Pathfinders: Arts 4 Dementia is facilitating the training which will be provided by Dementia Pathfinders. Details of the event including the identity of the trainer may be subject to change. In the unlikely event of the training being cancelled, Arts 4 Dementia will be liable only for reimbursement of the cost charged to participants for the training.

Refunds: Arts 4 Dementia is not able to offer refunds to delegates unable to attend. A delegate unable to attend may appoint a replacement delegate by advising the name, organisation represented and email address of the replacement by email to before the start of the training.



Arcola Theatre is 2 minutes walk from both Dalston Kingsland Overground Station and Dalston Junction Overground Station.


Arcola is just 2 minutes’ walk from both Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction stations, on the London Overground.

  • 5 minutes by train from Highbury & Islington (connecting with Victoria line).

  • 10 minutes by train from Whitechapel (connecting with District and Hammersmith and City lines).

  • 10 minutes by train from Stratford (connecting with Central, Jubilee, DLR lines and National Rail).

Arcola is a 5-minute bus ride away from Hackney Downs station (10 minutes from Liverpool Street, connecting with Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines).


Arcola is served by the following bus routes:

  • 149 from London Bridge or Edmonton Green.

  • 242 from Tottenham Court Road via Liverpool Street or Hackney Central.

  • 6 or 243 from Old Street or Wood Green.

  • 38 or 56 from Angel or Clapton Pond Roundabout/Lea Bridge Road.

  • 30 or 277 from Highbury and Islington.

Street parking around Ashwin Street is extremely limited. A list of nearby car parks is available on the Hackney Council website.
