In Memoriam

Patricia Guillaume (1931 - 2016)

Patricia Guillaume was a pianist and piano teacher, who inspired many children and adults throughout her life, including a young pianist who was able to enter the BBC Musician of the Year. She was a warm, nurturing and lovely lady who sadly suffered from Dementia in the last five years of her life. She introduced her first husband, Edward, to classical music and after having been widowed, had a joyous six years with her second husband, John, where they were often to be found playing together on two pianos, accompanied by peals of laughter. She had two children; Richard, her son, who was killed by a driver on the roads aged 39 and her daughter, Pippa, who has been a professional musician throughout her life.

Patricia's friends and family were very happy to contribute towards Arts 4 Dementia at her funeral and happily, Pippa Dames-Longworth, Patricia’s daughter, was also able to add an amount of money that had been collected for a Dementia charity as part of an auction in a Christmas concert, given by herself and a colleague, for the residents of Barcombe Village in East Sussex.

Music is a profound and powerful force as one’s ability to speak and communicate is compromised. I have no doubt at all that the musical moments I was able to bring into Mum’s life when she was very ill, were some of her happiest moments. She was still able to sing the first few phrases of Handel’s ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ long after she was unable to speak.
